Celebrating the start of the 2022 fall season with a quick trip down to beloved Charleston, SC and had a fantastic start to it with getting the morning started with a stroll through downtown’s cobblestone streets, coffee shops (like the lovely Second State Coffee), and foliage-filled nooks and crannies with ever-talented mixed-media artist (and incredible human!) Sara Copeland.
I’ve always assumed that a portrait session in Downtown Charleston would mean absolutely throwing all convenience to the wind (read: parking), primarily because of the sheer volume of other folks that visit Charleston basically year-round (I don’t blame anyone – the weather is unparalleled sunshine, fragrant jasmine, and hot hot heat that I am more than happy to sweat in unendingly). THAT SAID, we decided to go for a Downtown session anyway and it did not disappoint. Spanish moss? check. Cool brick texture from the Charleston Old City Jail walls? check. Dappled light, plant fronds hellbent on making their way into nearly every frame, conveniently placed seating situations for casual drawing in the late morning autumn sunshine? checkcheckcheck.
It’s really not much of a surprise that the highlight of this morning was the sunshine of not the actual sun itself, but of the effervescent (and creative!!) presence of Sara. She is an actor, visual artist, and momma of two of the cutest little nuggets ever – not to mention someone who is inherently an observer and lover of life. Y’all should very much bookmark this name in a cubby of your memory because her work is bonkers (see the drawing below for proof). This Downtown Charleston session (and the welcoming breeze of fall) felt like one of those wonderful sighs on your favorite spot on the couch after a long day. Thank you. <3
