I had the pleasure of meeting Rose, Greg, and their 3 wonderful children on a foggy morning in Detroit’s east side on Eastern Market recently for a family session. If you’ve never been to Dequindre Cut, or this part of Detroit, brace yourself for all the color, art, and generally playful + cool energy. While the area as a whole is in no shortage of murals (not to mention an incredible Farmer’s Market on Saturdays in Eastern Market), Dequindre Cut is a cool, Grand-Trunk-Railway-turned-pedestrian-greenway that sits below street-level and has a ton of green spaces, art murals, and direct access from Eastern Market the the Detroit Riverfront. In other words – the perfect place to photograph a family session for this newly Detroit-based family!
On meeting the Farleys, I was immediately greeted by nothing short of a crew of the cutest children, all of whom are brimming with brilliance and joy. Rose and Greg are infinitely interesting, kind, and lovely to talk with. This is a family that loves reading, spending time with each other, and caring for each other with a sweet playfulness that can only come from the kind of people who view the world as something to be endlessly curious about.
One thing I thought about while watching this family do their thing while I pranced around them with my camera — from the twins gleefully racing to a little flag in the ground and back (and not to mention their older sister managing the art of effortlessly reading while walking), to the quieter, everyday things like Rose passing out some granola bars for her children because they were hungry — was just how beautiful it is to be witness to moments, both big and small, like these.
Time is fleeting, and that’s okay. The stage that your children are in now is over in a blink, so: skip with them, read with them, jump with them, laugh even louder with them. These are the minutes that sum your life together, and oh man — are they precious. <3
